Introduction :

We've all been there....that moment when your old power supply finally decides to give up the ghost.  So, today will be very informative if that has just happened to you. We will be taking a look at the Thermaltake Tough Power Grand Series Power Supply 750w RGB.   Yep, it's a mouthful to say but can it deliver under the heaviest of loads as well, you may ask.

This power supply is fully modular and its claim to fame is not just that it's RGB but eco-friendly as well.  I'm optimistic about it.  I expect nothing but the best from it.  If they tell me it will be so, I expect it to be.  Will I have a hold new "Take" on power supplies?  Or will I?

About Thermaltake :

Building Thermaltake Technology into a cultural brand for the enjoyment of entertainment, e-Sports, technology and lifestyle is a realizable dream and a hope for an enterprise pursuing outstanding management. Although Thermaltake Group may face challenges in terms of entertainment, e-Sports, technology and lifestyle, we still seek to maximize the corporate value and are working hard to achieve the goal.

Packaging:

Thermaltake did a brilliant job on making the product stand out.  I like the way the Thermaltake brand is displayed in an orange band around the top of the box.  You can easily see what wattage the Power Supply is, as well as the fact it is RGB as well.  Everything is clearly written and the badges for things like 80+Gold are easy to see.  I've seen some power supplies come through my shop and not many of them have made an attempt at making them "shelf worthy".  But, Thermaltake have taken pride in their product and this will be one you will proudly display in your retail shop.  The pictures, the colours, everything about the box makes me believe they love their products.

Unboxing:

Inside the box, you will see your warranty, and manual on top of a foam packed PSU.  To the side are your cables in a nice velcro bag.  When you take the foam off of the PSU, it is wrapped in cloth with Thermaltake on it.   Most companies put some cheap plastic on it and some clear tape but Thermaltake are really getting top marks from me on presentation.

Installation:

This will depend on your chassis, but in basics, connect the 24 pin connector and the CPU connector to the PSU and any relevant cables you will need such as SATA for your HDD etc.  Then, attach your RGB connector to the PSU and mount in your chassis using the 4 screws to hold into place.  Connect all of your cables to the appropriate places on the board and components.  Simple.  You can control the RGB with the switch on the back or if your motherboard supports it you can do it through the motherboard software.

Conclusion:

There are many fully modular power supplies on the market in the 80+ Gold range.  Some of these are priced lower, some higher.  When I sat back and looked at the test results, the fact this one is RGB, the efficiency, the presentation when we unboxed it, mixed with the guts to include a floppy connection...Well, I had to give it the old thumbs up on value for money. This is a great Power Supply.  I was really impressed with it. When the only things negative I can find about it are the ends of the connections and the ports of the PCIe connectors being red, that's saying a lot!  I highly recommend this product!

Stand out point:  RGB

Pros:

  • no multicolour wires

  • flat cables

  • RGB

  • value for money

  • performed well in tests

  • outer box looked phenomenal

  • unboxing presentation of the product was awesome

Cons:

  • red on the end of the PCIe cable

  • red on the PCIe connection the unit itself
