Introduction :

Lately PC chassis makers have moved away from DVD drive bays and card reader bays, and even card readers built in.  When I asked one of the leading manufactures of chassis why this was, they simply said "Times are changing and people don't use that stuff as much.  If they do, they can always get an external and plug it in through a USB port." Fair enough, I guess.

So, I need to see files on my camera card, what do I do?  Sandberg have offered us a solution.  They have a cared reader that is about the size of a USB pen.  It reads as well as writes to SD or Micro SD cards.  My problem may well be solved!  Let's go take a closer look.

Pssssssst!  While you're at it, why don't you hop over to the YouTube channel?  While you are there you can like the video, post comments and even subscribe.

Packaging:

Blue border around a black background with a high quality picture.  All relevant information is clear and easy to find.  Simple but stylish and will look good hanging on your wall.  It has a sturdy hanger for those like me that have slat walls.

Unboxing:
3 Device 90 Day Bullguard subscription, product
Upon first inspection, it feels rather plastic like than aluminium.
The device was not securely packaged, it had packaging but it sort of banged around a bit.  I would have preferred a more snug packaging to be fair.

Installation:

  1. Plug your card into the reader
  2. Plug the reader into your device of choice in the port of choice.

Testing:

This could have done with a small instruction card.  While it is not rocket science, a lot of people might be confused about having to flip the USB - A to to get to the Micro USB.

The flip part is a bit stiff, and it could have done with some sort of button to make the access to it easier.

The device measures 6.8 CM (L) 2.2 CM (W)  1.1 CM (D)

Conclusion:

This is a great sized tool.  It's useful for people that do call outs.  Our bags are heavy and the last thing we need is another over sized gadget with wires to keep up with to do the job that this does and it's the size of a USB stick!  I still say that the access to the Micro USB was poorly designed though.  Someone could damage the reader trying to open it.  Maybe Sandberg will rethink this and perhaps come out with a version 2.0 that has a button for release.  I would like to also see in 2.0 some instructions and better packaging.  All in all it gets the job done though.

Stand out point:  It's size and no use of cables

Pros:

  • Can be used in USB A, USB C and Micro USB

  • Can be used for both SD and Micro SD cards

  • Travels well.  (Size of a memory stick)

  • No cables to have to worry about.

Cons:

  • Not very well packed.

  • No instructions

  • Hard to expose the Micro USB due to poor design

  • Fells plastic rather than aluminium.

  • When you take the caps off they are easy to lose.
