Video & Testing by: Philip Griffiths

Review by:  Jennifer Griffiths

ADATA XPG Z1 DDR4 overclocking memory is designed as the ultimate upgrade for overclockers, enthusiasts, and gamers thanks to its remarkable performance and power efficiency. Even with speeds of up to 3333MHz and a transfer bandwidth reaching up to 26.6GB/s, XPG Z1 consumes 20% less power when compared to DDR3. Utilizing Thermal Conductive Technology and 10-layer PCB with 2oz of copper, XPG Z1 provides excellent cooling performance, as well as great stability whether you are on the battlefield gaming or trying to achieve higher benchmarks while overclocking. Amazing performance with great power efficiency, looks cool and acts cool with the jet wing cooper design heatsink, consumes less power which great enhances the signal data transfer. The Z1 is made from high quality chips selected through a strict filtering process all by Adata.

From the moment you open the packaging on the ADATA XPG Z1 8GB DDR 4 RAM, you feel a need for speed.  You hold in your hand what could well be a wing of an airplane or the spoiler of a luxury sports car.  It looks that good!  In fact, it would not be far off, as the carbon texture is used for race cars.

If that’s not enough to get your attention, how about the fact that you will be getting improved performance with 20% less power consumption compared to DDR 3, plus the fact your system will run cooler and more stable.   It does this by using Thermal Conductive Technology and 10-layer PCBs (Printed Circuit Board) with 2 oz of copper to reduce electronic resistance and in return enhances the signal transfer and extends the life of the memory.

The module in the centre is slightly higher than most modules but once again, they thought it through, it will not be a problem in most builds. *Provided you do not have an oversized cooler which may have clearance issues*   ADATA can be proud of this memory not just for looks but for the research that must have gone into making a great product.  What a great product it is, I would go so far to say that this is THE memory to have.

Packaging:

The packaging is attractive and eye-catching with a starburst effect and a window, so you can see the module inside.  It will look great in your shop and catch the customer’s eye.  The only thing that is really needed is a hanging hook which they neglected to put on the package.

Unboxing:

There is a small leaflet inside with the module as with most memory.  It has a generous lifetime warranty.

A carbon fibre effect is given to the XPG logo and provides a welcomed section of contrast against the bright red surroundings. ADATA doesn’t let the kit’s aesthetics slip elsewhere, either.  The PCB is pure black

Reliability and usage:

We’ve had it on a stress test for 72 hrs with no issues as well as used for general use and had no hiccups or problems.  It is very stable.

Two strips of metals converge atop the DRAM PCB to form ADATA’s stylish heatsink. By using two separate strips of metal, rather than a single block, the heatsinks are easy to remove. That’s good for overclockers who fancy their chances.

Testing

Our Testing System for the review:

  • Motherboard: Gigabyte Z370XP SLI

  • CPU: Intel Core i5 8600K @ 3.6GHz

  • Cooler: Akasa Watercooler Venom R20 RGB

  • Memory: ADATA 8GB DDR4 2400 AX4U240038G16 and HyperX HX424C15FB/4

  • Card: Onboard Video

  • Case:  Open-Sided testing case

  • Power Supply:  Cooler Master G750M 750W

  • OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Professional 64 Bit

Super Pi 32M (low the score the better)

We used the ’32M’ test in Super Pi to analyse the effect that system memory has on single-threaded performance. We tested it against a Kingston HyperX HX424C15FB/4

Kingston Hyper X = 562

ADATA XPG Z1 = 540

3DMark (higher the score the better)

We used 3DMark‘s ‘Time Spy Extreme’ benchmark which is designed to be used on gaming PCs. We opted for the Extreme setting.

Kingston Hyper X = 3744

ADATA XPG Z1 = 3786

While both Memory sticks have basicly the same specs (Kingston's timing is a little better at 15-15-15) the ADATA XPG Z1 scored better on both tests. While the scores are not groundbreaking they do show the ADATA memory is a quality product.

Overclocking

We managed to achieve a stable memory overclock of 3000MHz. It was set to an 18x memory divider and 100:133 BCLK: DRAM frequency ratio, as well as 15-15-15-36-2T timings and voltage of 1.35V.

We had it on a stress test for 12 hrs with no issues.

The Overclock did also help out scores in the tests but not by much

Super PI 32M (lower the better)

ADATA XPG Z1 = 540

Overclocked = 531

3DMark (higher the score the better)

ADATA XPG Z1 = 3786

Overclocked = 3801

The Conclusion

We must say that ADATA has really made an impressive product.  Not only is it going to look great in a build, the performance and stability are on point as well.  This product is definitely great value for money.

Stand Out Point:

The standout point for me comes in two parts.  The first one is the overall performance and stability.  The second is the awesome look and design.

The Pros

  • Packaging is attractive for the retailers to have on display as well as to the customers.

  • Speeds

  • Stability and Reliability

  • Lifetime warranty

  • It will look great in a build

The Cons

  • No hanging hook on the packaging

  • No extras

Mentionable but nothing to cry about:

This memory is a bit higher in the middle than most.  This could interfere with aftermarket cooling.  Be sure to check the measurements of the cooler you plan to use with the height of the memory to ensure enough clearance.  Also, the Kingston memory of the same spec is cheaper BUT, the Kingston does not look as smart.

Scores out of 5:

Packaging:  4

Overclocking: 5

Value: 4

Looks: 5

With this being said, TFT awards the Gold award to ADATA for a well-made and great value for money memory.
